Bushman Rock Conservation Project

The Bushman Rock Conservation Project specializes in the breeding and re-introduction of endangered antelope into the wild. The project was initially the brain-child of Richard and Sally Passaportis who, at the height of the land reform program of the late 1990's set land aside to re-home antelope rescued from farms threatened with invasion. Neighboring farmers saw the value of this project and the initial 100 hectare property has since grown to include some 1000 hectares of re-claimed wilderness.

In 2001 Bushman Rock was approached by the world renowned Tikki Hywood Trust. http://www.zimbabwe7.wildlifedirect.org. The Trust is the only registered conservation project in Zimbabwe and specializes in the breeding and re-introduction to the wild of the lesser known, yet more endangered, African Mammals. Bushman Rock is the release site of a number of Trust animals, namely Serval, African Wild Cat and the 'animal that the world forgot', the Lichtenstein's Hartebeest. This magnificent, yet slightly comical looking antelope once roamed the African Savanna in their thousands. Now the herd that runs on Bushman Rock is one of the largest in Zimbabwe. Lisa Hywood is considered to be at the forefront of conservation efforts in Africa and she maintains contact with the animals released into the Project. The Project has benefited greatly from her efforts and advice and our relationship has evolved and resulted in both parties branching into areas previously never considered. The Kusanganisa Project is one such area.
